Fondation Clément: Conspicious Invisiblity

Overview

In-visibilité Ostentatoire, with reference to the deafening silences of history, presents the work of a dozen artists who explore the unspoken facts of the past and the present or events that memory forgot or chose to forget. By recounting certain historical facts that were not mentioned in their time, it evokes the mechanisms at work, the collective amnesia or the social taboos that influence our choices and our silences. In-visibilité Ostentatoire also shows the work of certain artists who draw their inspiration from the invisible world, that of the “mistè” (spirits) who seem to draw the strings of Haitian reality. This invisible world and its cohort of popular beliefs is, for many of them, a source of inspiration. The exhibition explores the “ostentatious invisibility” of Haiti at major international events, insisting on the visibility of what should have been obvious.
